Recently there has been much debate surrounding fantasy books in various bookish communities and lots of interest in people getting back into the genre. If you were unaware, fantasy is my favorite genre and almost exclusively what I read. As such, I have quite the list of books that I think deserve so much more love.
This Poison Heart by Kaylnn Bayron
This Poison Heart is a YA retelling of The Secret Garden with lots of Greek Mythology interwoven throughout. It has a strong gothic feel with lovable characters and a setting that draws you in. It's a quick and easy read and the start of a new duology!
An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
An Enchantment of Ravens can best be described as The Cruel Prince meets A Court of Thorns and Roses. It's a fae romance with a strong female protagonist and lots of magic. It feels like a warm hug as you're reading it and has the perfect balance of action and romance.
Daughter of Sparta by Claire M. Andrews
Daughter of Sparta is Circe meets Percy Jackson. It's complete with heart stoping action and a swoon worthy romance. Plus, it can be read as a standalone but it has a sequel set to release later this year.
The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova
The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina is a magical story about what it means to be family. It's told in two timelines, one following the Montoya's as they navigate the death of their family matriarch, Orquidea Divina and the other following Orquidea's life before she ended up in Four Rivers. It is a beautiful story filled with magical realism.
Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Who doesn't love a story about the Mayan god of death? Gods of Jade and Shadow is a beautiful fairy tale set in the Jazz era in Mexico and features a strong female protagonist, lots of magic, and just enough action.
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
Half Sick of Shadows is a feminist King Arthur retelling set in the point of view of the Lady of Shalott. It is beautifully written and told in alternating time lines. I found to be uniquely told and profoundly relatable.
