2021 was the year I finally got back into reading. Like, really back into reading. I read over 70 books this year and found some of my new all time favorite reads. It was almost impossible to whittle down my list but I finally came up with a group of five books that were the cream of the cream. So without further ado, here are the best books I read in 2021!
Circe by Madeline Miller
My first read of the year turned out to become one of my all time favorites. Circe by Madeline Miller is a retelling of the Greek myth of Circe. Circe is born into the House of Helios and is strangely different. She isn't strong like her father, the god of the sun, or beautiful like her mother. That is until she discovers she possess the power of witchcraft, and her existence threatens Zeus. I found this story so refreshing in it's heartbreaking simplicity. Circe's story is one I found immensely relatable and is one that will stick with me for years to come.
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
This book was one that surprised me the most this year. Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian is a feminist take on the Legend of King Arther and Lady Shalott. Elaine was a character that I related to so personally. Her battle between doing what is best for her and pleasing those around her really struck a cord with me. The story is also so beautifully crafted. Told in a nonlinear timeline, it shifts between the past, the present, and the future. I truly feel that this book is something special.
The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova
Another book that came out of left field and blew me away was The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova. This is a multigenerational story that follows the Montoyas after the death of their matriarch, Orquidea Divina. It is told in two alternating timelines, one detailing Orquidea's life and the other following her grandchildren as they search to find the truth of their inheritance. This story is character driven and filled with magical realism. It reads like a new fairy tale unfolding right before you. And it's one that is unforgettable.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
I know it might not seem like it, but I usually try to avoid books that are overly hyped. So, I was a bit skeptical picking up The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, but I ended up loving it. While many would say this is a romance story, I'm here to tell you its not. While yes, there is romance but that is not the point of the story. It is a story filled with political intrigue and scheming. Jude is a formidable protagonist and Cardan is, well, Cardan (and yes I love him). That paired with Holly Black's signature fairy tale prose makes for an unforgettable story.
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
One of my last reads of the year turned out to be one of my favorites. Caraval by Stephanie Garber is a whimsical tale about two sisters who will do anything for each other. It's filled with whimsy, romance, and mystery and is just plan fun. It's unpredictable in the best ways. It's the perfect series to sit and binge read!
