Review: Daughter of the Moon Goddess

"Our paths were forged from the choices we made. Whether to reach for an opportunity or to let it pass by. To be swept up with change or to hold your ground." Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Susan Lynn Tan

Daughter of the Moon Goddess is a sparkling story filled with love, hope, and magic. The beautiful prose draws you in while the plot and characters keep you coming back for more. This along with the lush world-building made this story unforgettable. While it starts out a bit slow, by the end, Sue Lynn Tan will have you at the edge of your seat.

My one complaint is that at times, I felt like the pacing was off. I also found the main characer, Xingyin, annoying in the beginning. She was quick to become angry and to judge those around her. But as the story went on, she really grew on me. While she was those things, she was also sure of herself and knew what she wanted. She wasn't afraid to make hard choices and she was unapologetic when she made them.

While at times plot twists and events seemed a bit predictable, the fairytale-like prose, well fleshed out characters, and heart-stopping action made up for it. Overall, I would liken this story to Madeline Miller's Circe and Elizabeth Lim's Six Crimson Cranes. If you are a fan of those stories or looking for a unique and beautiful fantasy story, look no further than Daughter of the Moon Goddess.

While this is the first of a new fantasy duology, I think it could very easily be read as a standalone. It doesn't leave you with a clifhanger, instead it delivers a complete story with a satisfying ending. One I was glad of after reading the over 500 page story.
